PATIO GUIDE

Concrete Slabs

Concrete slabs are usually the cheapest type of paving, so can be ideal if you’re working to a smaller budget or if you have a very large area to pave. There are many different colours and textures available, giving plenty of choice. Concrete slabs can require more maintenance to keep looking new, particularly in areas that have limited sun as algae can appear and the slabs may stain. After installation, a patio seal can be applied to help reduce maintenance and to keep them looking smart. A regular brush or pressure wash is still advised.

Natural SLABs

For a more traditional patio, natural slabs are a great option. There are many different materials available, including sandstone, granite and slate to name a few. The beauty of natural slabs is that there are lots of design options; in some designs, no two slabs are the same, giving a really unique finish. Other products are produced in a more uniform fashion to give a consistent look.

Natural slabs resist colour changes better than concrete slabs but do have a higher price tag. They will still require some maintenance to keep them in top condition and a patio seal can be used on some types of natural slabs, depending on the material chosen.

Porcelain SLabs

Despite looking very natural, porcelain slabs are actually a man-made product. They are created to be very durable and resistant to algae and frost. There are lots of different colours and styles available, with many people favouring these slabs for a modern look. These slabs work particularly well for paving areas from dining rooms or kitchens to give a smooth transition to the outdoor space.

Although the initial cost of the slabs will be higher, the need for maintenance is hugely reduced, giving you more time to enjoy your garden.
